As a member of the GBCLA you are invited to a Nature Flotilla Saturday August 23rd.
Bobs and Crow Lake residents will gain knowledge and resources to help protect their shorelines and attract wildlife at our Association’s Nature Flotilla , to be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 from 10 am to 1 pm at several sites in the Mud Bay Basin area of Bobs Lake. “Click for Flotilla Map”
Nature lovers will travel by kayak, canoe or powerboat as they enjoy a self-guided tour of five sites where they will meet experts and learn about attracting wildlife to their waterfront property, providing a safe turtle nursery, helping frogs to flourish, welcoming eagles on the lakes, understanding algae and aquatic plants, and celebrating “our” Frontenac gray rat snake, a threatened species that is often seen in this area. Visitors are invited to make their way by boat to any of the five sites on the map for a tour and brief presentation by a wildlife expert.
Coloured balloons (see stars on attached map) will help visitors find the presentation areas. There will be hands-on activities, advice and information, and lots of freebies to take home and begin right away to attract wildlife and ensure the health of the waters and shorelines of Bobs and Crow Lakes. Activities for children will make the Nature Flotilla a fun family outing. The event will conclude with a floating picnic where participants will meet up on boats in Mud Bay at 1 pm and enjoy their own packed lunch while chatting with other cottagers and year-round residents as well as our experts from the five sites. The multi-coloured balloons will mark the spot.
The Nature Flotilla is the work of the Wildlife Sub-Committee of the Greater Bobs and Crow Lake Association (GBCLA). They group formed in 2011 after the lakes were selected by the Toronto Zoo as one of only three sites to take part in a wildlife stewardship pilot project. Members planned a successful shoreline workshop and constructed a Turtle Nesting Beach in 2012. In 2013, they, in partnership with the Toronto Zoo and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, hosted a Bio-Blitz in which participants worked with experts to develop an inventory of plant and animal species in Bobs & Crow Lakes.
All are invited to the Nature Flotilla, which is sure to be a fun and interactive way to learn about biodiversity and lake stewardship.
