Through hands-on programs in stewardship, fisheries, water testing, and safety, GBCLA volunteers work year-round to keep Bobs and Crow Lakes healthy and safe to enjoy. This is a summary of our divisions- visit each tab for more information.
Marine Safety
Boating injuries and accidents are almost entirely preventable. Our sharing of safety tips, placement of shoal markers, speed signage and the sharing of emergency launch lists with the OPP and area Fire Chiefs aim to make our lakes as safe as possible for those who enjoy time on the water.
Lake Stewardship
Environmental awareness and encouraging careful, responsible use of the lakes and surrounding lands, ensures these parcels of Earth we are so lucky to spend time at stay healthy and cherished by future generations.
Fisheries
Our fisheries program covers responsible angling, fish stocking, fish habitat enhancements and other joint efforts & projects with our local conservation authorities.
Water Testing
GBCLA volunteers run two complementary water testing programs:
Lake Partner Program — Ontario’s volunteer-based monitoring program, in partnership with FOCA. Volunteers collect spring water samples and take monthly clarity readings at 11 sites from May–October.
Rideau Valley Conservation Authority Testing — Volunteers assist RVCA testing at 9 additional sites for calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, E. coli, clarity, oxygen, pH, and temperature.
Invasive Species
Invasive species are the single largest long-term threat to the lakes’ natural health. Aquatic plants, invertebrates such as zebra mussels, invasive fish, plants and forest pests can cause imbalances in our ecosystems. We share information on how to spot, report and take action where able to assist nature in recovering from such species.
Cottage & Fire Safety
Having safety measures in place at your rural property can ensure time at the cottage remains as relaxing rather than stressful. We share about how to protect your cottage from fire emergencies, Winter damage, theft, radon gas as well as what precautions to take with wildlife, lyme and noxious plants.
